As of late, I've come to the conclusion that everything that I have been seeking is inherently within myself. I know it may sound esoteric and cliché, but trusting my own intuition and following through on my hunches has given me greater fulfillment in my life's choices than going with the "conventional" or "popular" opinion of how one should live or act. Society has conditioned us to use our logical mind, which is not tailored to the individual person, rather, it's a "one size fits all" mentality. The logical mind is also supremely limiting. In the words of Albert Einstein, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." Our culture's purposeful drive for the logical mind over the creative/imaginative mind can explain why funding for the arts is usually the first item to get cut when schools undergo budget cuts, or why most families encourage their children to follow careers where stability and financial security are virtually guaranteed (i.e. tech, finance, law, medicine, and others). It's rare that families will encourage their children to be artists, dancers, actors, or makeup artists (or they may, but not without putting up some resistance first). As an example, I'm seeing a lot of parents encouraging their children to go into tech, even though the child is not at all interested in going down that path, but instead clearly has other talents they want to pursue. Even more relevant, I've seen a major upswing in my peers changing careers from the arts and humanities entirely in order to pursue degrees and careers in technology--setting their eyes on tech giants like Google or Facebook for example. Although there is nothing wrong with changing careers, the movement from artistic vocations to the structured and highly logical field of tech is emblematic of the times, and our society's preference for limits, structure, and advancement of capitalism. This societal preference for the logical mind has everything to do with making decisions based on fear. When one truly knows oneself, and is in perfect alignment with one's higher purpose, there is no fear-based decision making. Trust of one's intuition and following one's "gut" is the secret to long-lasting happiness and fulfillment. I know that I've struggled with making decisions that are in my best interest, because I have been lured by financial security, or "Golden Handcuffs". In making the "logical" decision, I did not realize that I had other options open to me that although not as financially lucrative, would make me happy and personally fulfilled. I have also made decisions based on my own intuition and gut feelings, and they always turned out to be the best choices I've ever made. For example, quitting my 9-5 job was a huge gut feeling that I acted upon in order to pursue my personal media projects. In doing so, my inspiration and creative energy reappeared (it wasn't gone, but in hibernation), and I have been extremely dedicated and prolific in terms of my media production projects, such as my podcast, blog, youtube channel, and personal branding. I also earned three certificates to further the growth of my business in social media and digital marketing. So don't make the "logical" decision. Do what will light you up and get you up. Don't consider other "well-meaning" opinions of others. You are on your own path, not theirs. In the wise words of the I-Ching, "The path that one person follows is not the correct path for any other person. Each of us must walk his own path to enlightenment— that is the way.”
